Family Therapy
In Family Therapy a resiliency-based approach is used in working with families. This is based on the belief that all families possess the resources for resilience, and that empowerment can occur through working together even in the midst of severe personal and family stress and adversity. A safe, empathic environment is created so the therapist is listening to family members sharing of their experiences. Beliefs and visions about the future are explored and expanded. Traumatic events involve extreme stress that outstrips our ability to cope. Trauma affects us emotionally, cognitively, and physically. It always involves loss. Whether a traumatic event has threatened your life, robbed you of someone you love, or destroyed your community, it deprives you--suddenly--even violently of what you had. It destroys the sense of safety, predictability, and justice that you assumed and expected in your life. Trauma therapy helps in recovery and in promoting post-traumatic growth and the recovery of feeling whole and connected. More information Relationship Education
Prepare/Enrich facilitation helps couples who are preparing for marriage, or who have been married or living together for years, to gain more knowledge and skills in how to communicate and resolve problems effectively. Premarital couples are able to express, discuss, and realistically modify their assumptions about what lies ahead. The husband-to-be and the wife-to-be are seen as equally valuable and equally important in the building of a good marriage. Workbook exercises help couples explore strength and growth areas, and develop a more balanced relationship. More information |
Grief and Loss Counselling
Grieving can be a long and arduous journey. Grief visits us all. And when it does, life seems to lose its meaning. However, a satisfying and meaningful life is possible after loss - if our grief is resolved. Grief therapy helps with achieving this resolution with the loss of a spouse, the death of a child, helping children in grief, the death of a parent, the loss of a sibling, the loss of a friend, the loss of a pet or another significant loss. Emotion Focused Couple Therapy is most successful with couples who wish to restructure their relationship in terms of a close bond, but have become alienated by negative interaction cycles, often of a blame-withdraw nature. This therapy is based on Attachment theory which describes the enormous impact of deprivation, loss, rejection, and abandonment by those we need the most. The counsellor's task is to help to change the negative rigid interactional cycle the couple consistently engages in. Change occurs through new emotional experience and new interactional events. Child Counselling
Children cannot be counselled the same way as adults. Children may be involved in play or the use of media or storytelling. The aim of counselling children is to enable them to deal with painful emotional issues; achieve some understanding with regard to thoughts, emotions and behaviours; feel good about themselves; accept their limitations and strengths and feel okay about them; change behaviours that have negative consequences; and function comfortably and adaptively at home and at school.
