Each of us at various times in our lives experience troubling problems. It is normal to at first seek to manage many of these problems on our own. When we are successful in this we get back to feeling all is okay, but when we are still confronted with the problems, especially if they look overwhelming, we are faced with having to make decisions concerning what options we have to turn to.
If we have a good social network, we may bring up the painful issues with a trusted friend or acquaintance. They may or may not be knowledgeable or experienced enough to help us with our dilemmas. Pastoral care may be able to provide valuable holistic support, but there are times when many of us need more specific, expert help with life's challenges and pains. This is the role of Christian counselling.
The purpose of Christian counselling is not to simply support people through their problems. The Christian counsellor endeavours to assist people to become more whole through the use of wisdom, good skills, encouragement and hope so that they may become more completely the individuals that God intended. With this view in mind, at the heart of Christian counselling is the important element of helping people recognise their intrinsic value. Christian beliefs involve accepting that we are all created by God in His image which means each of us has intrinsic dignity and personal worth. This intrinsic equality between all people energises Christian counselling work with others.
The Christian counsellor has a wonderful resource to draw from in believing God is faithful and loving and understands our human weaknesses and failings. None of us lives entirely as God intended. It is very common to use self-protective strategies that produce unexpected and unwanted results. Our choices can lead to repeating self-defeating patterns of behaviour. We can feel trapped and powerless. But in reality we are not. Counselling helps to unearth deeper motivations that are powerfully at work within us so we can find enduring peace by redirecting our energy and our goals into alternative meaningful and desirable pathways.
Troubling emotions may surface when we are frustrated and disappointed by not achieving important goals in our lives. Exploring emotions can help the counsellor untangle the deep distressing realities of a counsellee's life while the counselling process provides a safe context for emotional honesty.
A Christian counsellor is able to come alongside you as you struggle with your issues, providing understanding, wisdom and guidance as you process what is troubling you and explore options for the way ahead. Christian Counselling can be seen as a journey of hope. This is the hope that is rooted in the biblical belief that God is willing and able to draw near to provide comfort, encouragement, support and blessing. This hope applies to every person, no matter what their circumstances.
